Esa-Pekka Salonen is not only an internationally acclaimed conductor but also a composer whose works are performed all over the world. Born in Helsinki, he studied at the Sibelius Academy and later in Italy, where his teachers included Franco Donatoni and Niccolò Castiglioni. Esa-Pekka Salonen made his conducting début in 1979 with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. From 1985 until 1994 he was principal guest conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, and from 1985 until 1995 principal conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. From 1992 until 2009 he was music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and in 2009 he was awarded the title of honorary conductor of that orchestra. Since September 2008 Salonen has been principal conductor and artistic advisor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. He is especially renowned for his interpretations of contemporary music, and has given many world première performances.
