Alec Frank-Gemmill

Alec Frank-Gemmill studied in Cambridge, London and Berlin with teachers including Hugh Seenan, Radovan Vlatković and Marie-Luise Neunecker. As principal horn of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, he divides his time between the orchestra, solo playing, chamber music and conducting. For ten years he was principal horn of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, where he often featured as a soloist. Concerto highlights from that time include Mozart (on the natural horn) with Richard Egarr, Ligeti and Strauss with Robin Ticciati and Schumann with John Eliot Gardiner. He was a member of the BBC New Generation Artists scheme from 2014 until 2016, performing solo with the BBC orchestras on numerous occasions. A sought-after colleague in chamber music, he has played at festivals all over the world and regularly performs at London’s Wigmore Hall. Alec Frank-Gemmill is a dedicated exponent of historically-informed performance and is a member of Peter Whelan’s Ensemble Marsyas among other early music groups. His first disc for BIS records, entitled ‘A Noble and Melancholy Instrument’, was a survey of the different horns of the nineteenth century. Released in 2017, it met with great critical acclaim. His next disc, ‘Before Mozart’, came out in 2018 and explored the solo repertoire for horn in the mid-eighteenth century. It was not only lauded by the press but has become a favourite on classical music radio stations. The present recording, like the previous two, was made possible thanks to a Fellowship from the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. For further information please visit Alec Frank-Gemmill's website.
