The Swedish pianist Fredrik Ullén has performed at a large number of international music festivals, to outstanding critical acclaim (‘spectacular’, New York Times 2001; ‘jaw-dropping virtuosity’, BBC Music Magazine 2006; ‘superhuman’, Piano News 2006). His repertoire includes many of the most complex and demanding works in the piano literature, such as Ligeti’s complete piano études, Reger’s Spezialstudien and music by Sorabji.
Ullén’s solo CDs for BIS Records have without exception been enthusiastically praised by internationally renowned critics and have received an impressive number of prestigious awards and accolades, including the Diapason d’or, CHOC de Le Monde de la Musique, Stern des Monats (Fono Forum) and Recommandé (Répertoire).
As a teacher, Fredrik Ullén has given seminars and masterclasses at several musical academies and colleges in Europe and the United States. In 2007 he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. He is also active as a neuroscientist, heading a research group at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm that studies the effects of musical training on the human brain.
