Frank Peter Zimmermann

Frank Peter Zimmermann is widely regarded as one of the foremost violinists of his generation. Making his début with the Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by Daniel Barenboim, in 1985, and with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1983 under Lorin Maazel, he performs with all major orchestras worldwide, including the Concertgebouworkest, all the London orchestras and the leading orchestras in the United States. He is a regular guest at the major music festivals, including Salzburg, Edinburgh and Lucerne. Over the years Frank Peter Zimmermann has built up an impressive discography, with virtually all major concerto repertoire, ranging from Bach to Ligeti, Dean and Pintscher, the six solo sonatas of Ysaÿe, the 24 Caprices of Paganini and the complete sonatas for violin and piano by J. S. Bach and Mozart. On BIS his previous releases include works by Shostakovich, Hindemith and Brett Dean, as well as a series of discs with Trio Zimmermann, the trio he has founded together with Antoine Tamestit (viola) and Christian Poltéra (cello).  Born in Duisburg, Germany, Frank Peter Zimmermann started learning the violin with his mother when he was five years old, going on to study with Valery Gradov, Saschko Gawriloff and Herman Krebbers. He plays on the 1711 Antonio Stradivari violin ‘Lady Inchiquin’, which is kindly provided by the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, ‘Kunst im Landesbesitz’.
